More quality on the way

Smith added and boss expects more signings soon

Manager John Gregory is confident of adding more quality players to his squad in the next few days and weeks.

The boss made his first addition of the summer on Monday when Reds paid a nominal fee to Stevenage to sign 27-year-old midfielder Jimmy Smith on a two-year contract.

“We’re delighted to have brought in Jimmy and there should be some more new players coming in soon,” he said.

“Myself and (Chief Executive) Michael Dunford are working hard to get agreements in place. I have identified the areas where we need strengthening and Jimmy is the first player in the door and he certainly won’t be the last.”

With more than 800 players due to be out of contract next month across the Premier League and Football League John admits it could take a while before his full squad has been assembled.

“I have spoken to lots of players and their agents and as usual they are taking their time and weighing up their options, that’s normal at this time of the year,” he added.

“I would love to have the entire squad in place when we come back for pre-season on June 30 but it might take a bit longer than that.

“But hopefully there should be some more players in before then. It’s what our fans want to see – they want to see their team taking shape for next season and getting excited about watching some new faces when we kick off on August 8.”
