We caught up with midfielder Jack Powell ahead of our win over Mansfield Town

25 October 2022

How has it been within the squad since Lewis Young took interim charge?

“The atmosphere has been refreshing to be honest, Youngy has addressed the group with a perfect mix of enthusiasm, intensity but also a sense of care and understanding to what each player is capable of. That has bred a feel good feeling amongst everyone, the main focus is always graft and bring your personal qualities to the table.”

How important is Youngy to the team's togetherness?

“A vital factor, as I touched on in the previous question, is that he understands the group and each individual. He understands how to develop the right culture within a team environment. We need to push each other, staff and players pulling in the same direction. At the end of the day, winning football matches is the key to everything at a football club. He will help us do that, no doubt.”

What did you make of our victory over Newport?

“I thought it was a very typical league 2 fixture. It was a battle start to finish. Every player contributed hard work and we had moments of quality that won us the game.”

How important have the fans been in sticking with the team despite previous poor results?

“I can’t really say enough about the fans in terms of their efforts to help us win football matches. We haven’t given them enough to shout about this season, I hope they enjoyed Saturday and we plan to make them proud of their team going forward.”

Which teammate have you been most impressed with on the pitch this season?

“For me, Tony Craig. He applies himself to the highest level every day. Game in, game out. It doesn’t surprise me. He’s a top player, an example to us all.”

Which teammate has had the worst clobber this season?

“The squad as a whole don’t make much of an effort with their gear coming into training but when I get asked that question, the first thing that springs to mind is my mate Dom Telford’s baggy black Nike tracksuit.”

Which teammate has the worst banter this season?

“Tom Nichols and Jake Hessenthaler have both got rubbish banter, the pair of them could send me to sleep on a daily basis.”

What are the goals of the team and yourself for the season ahead now?

“We want to continue our solid status as a competitive league two team as we have done in the past couple of seasons. Once we get to that point, I think the squad can achieve more than that. Right now, as cliche as it is, it’s purely about putting everything into every game and seeing where that takes us.”
